Description: Harland's arbalest was made by the Founders, and when anyone with even a single drop of Founder blood wields it, they can rely on their protection. When Harland drops to 4 physical health, an indistinct spectral entity will form, wielding an arbalest similar to his own:

Whenever Harland loses health beyond this, the entity will gain 1 Health. The entity will automatically attack whatever foe is dealing the most damage to Harland. If there's no obvious foe per se, it will simply follow him until something attacks it or him. It will disappear if it loses all of its physical health or if Harland goes above 4 physical health. When Harland reaches 2 physical health, he will gain the ability to make two arbalest attacks each turn until he goes above 2 Health.

Harland's society

Harland comes from a society that lives completely underground. Water trickling down from the surface or in underground streams is rich in nutrients; several varieties of fungi and insects feed on these, forming the base of a food chain almost as diverse as any that might be found on the surface. The tunnels themselves were created an unknown number of years ago by the ancestors of this society, known as the Founders. They are lit by a variety of bioluminescent sources.

The Founders are revered by Harland's society as demigods; for that matter, they may very well have been. Any items created by the Founders themselves is subject to some degree of reverence, and appear to be virtually indestructible. Virtually all citizens of the society are in possession of at least one such item — Harland, for example, carries an arbalest that, despite being nearly 600 years old and in heavy use, is in impeccable condition.

For the most part, due to what items and knowledge were left behind by the Founders (either by design or by coincidence), Harland's society bears a strong resemblance to the Wild West, except for the fact that it's underground and shit, and the local flora/fauna are more than a bit different. Why? Because I fucking said so.


Moved out to the frontier when he was 19 because he didn't feel like being a carpenter like the rest of the men in his family. Decided to work law enforcement for a small town, became its sheriff. Practiced vigilante-style justice whenever he got the opportunity because the local judge was corrupt as fuck and the jail was more or less cardboard. Prefers to use the arbalest because the guns they have access to are notoriously unreliable and inaccurate, and the low lighting conditions can make their flash of light a liability when stealth is a priority.

One day, while chasing criminal scum down a relatively unexplored tunnel, the floor collapsed, depositing Harland into the House.
